Rocky Patel Decade Torpedo Review

Rocky Patel Decade

The Rocky Patel Decade is a special 10th anniversary release from Rocky and the torpedo earned a 95 rating from Cigar Afficionado. Rocky himself brought a whole bunch of these cigars to give away at the Aleppo Smoker I attended back in March and I forced myself to leave it alone for a while. Well, this past weekend I finally took it out of the humidor and fired it up.

The overall construction of the Decade is absolutely top-notch with a nice, oily Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper and a special (marked “secret” on the Rocky Patel web site) blend of Nicaraguan leaf for the binder and filler. The cigar is made at the Nestor Plasencia owned El Paraiso Factory in Honduras and it is the same factory that produced the Rocky Patel Sungrown, another cigar sitting in my humidor and due for a review in the near future. The Decade is box pressed and feels nicely wrapped and sturdy. The Decade lit up easily and the burn was nice and level. The smoke was very pleasant with a rich, full aroma and great draw.

I would best describe the flavor profile of the Decade is a bit of sleeper. The rich, chocolate colored wrapper belies a smoke that is mild mannered, but in reality the cigar packs a little more punch than its exterior might indicate. This cigar teeters on the brink between “medium” and “full-bodied”, but regardless of its moniker, this cigar has some teeth and those of you who prefer your cigars on the mild side, might want to think twice before you drop $10 on a Decade.

The cigar has a nice spicy flavor with a touch of nuttiness that I found quite pleasant. It got a little hot down near the end, but nothing I’d consider a problem and I smoked this bad boy right down to my thumb. The Decade was an exceptional smoke and I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes a nice “medium” cigar with a little kick.

I was never a Rocky Patel fan, so, when a customer came to my store and asked for this cigars with a very uncommon animosity, I was a little shock so I decided to call Rocky Patel and get a box for the store. They where on Backorder (I mean the torpedos and that was on about October or september 2008) I got what they had at that time the Robustos. Not my favorite size but still I got them. When I smoked that Cigar I could understand the guy. We have been carrying the Decade since that time. I can not tell you how many cigars we have sold either online or locally at my store, but quite few. All I can tell you is that the best Feedback ever on a cigar, I can assure you is Rocky Patel Decade (anyone) So, I sure will recommend this cigars to everybody, even when is full body cigar, its so well balanced that almost everybody can smoked. Take a look at my store http://www.cuencacigars.com/Scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=120. and if you could also give me a feedback I will appreciated!!

In all honesty: I love my Rocky P’s. For me it is the Rocky Patel Sun Grown Junior. The taste and the draw is great and they are not that expensive. Really good to enjoy myself.

I just smoked a Decade torpedo while out on a dog walk. Very nice smoke! A very interesting, enjoyable smoke that I would characterize as medium bodied but full flavored. Not overwhelming at all, not even a hint (I had this smoke -before- dinner).

This cigar came as part of a six cigar sampler, of which I bought two. Smoked this one after 2 weeks of humi time. I’ll save the second one for a while before I smoke it.
